Cookies
“Cookies” are pieces of information that a website transfers to an individual’s hard drive for recordkeeping purposes. Cookies allow the website to remember important information that will make your use of the site more convenient. Off The Press uses cookies for a variety of purposes to improve your online experience. We may track the total number of visitors to our site on an anonymous aggregate basis.
Reading Off The Press does not require an account, and we do not set cookies of our own to identify you as a reader. The cookies and similar technologies used on this Website are set by the third-party services described in the sections below, principally our advertising partner and our analytics providers. Those services use them to select and measure advertising, to limit how often you see the same ad, to detect fraudulent or automated traffic, and to understand how our pages are used.
You can control cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers let you refuse new cookies, delete existing ones, or warn you before one is set. Advertising cookies can additionally be managed through the consent tool described under “Advertising” below. If you disable cookies, this Website will still work, but some features and some advertising controls may not function as intended.
Session Replay and Behavioral Analytics
Off The Press uses Contentsquare, a third-party analytics provider, to understand how visitors use this Website so that we can improve it. Contentsquare collects information about your interaction with our pages, including the pages you view, clicks and taps, mouse movement, scrolling, and technical details about your device, browser, operating system, and the approximate location derived from your IP address.
This includes a feature commonly known as session replay, which reconstructs a playback of a browsing session, along with aggregated heatmaps showing where visitors click and how far down a page they read. These reconstructions are assembled from interaction data. They are not a video or image recording of your screen.
We have configured Contentsquare to mask page content. Text on our pages, including anything you type into a form, is masked rather than captured in readable form; numeric digits are anonymized; and images and other media are masked. One exception applies: the text of a button or link you click may be recorded, so that we can tell which control was used. Off The Press does not use this data to attempt to identify individual visitors, and we do not use session replay to capture payment card details or account credentials.
Contentsquare processes this information on our behalf as a service provider. You can read how Contentsquare handles data in that role in its Services Privacy Policy. If you are a resident of a U.S. state that provides applicable privacy rights, you may exercise them through Contentsquare’s Do Not Sell or Share portal. You can also limit or prevent this collection at any time by using your browser’s privacy settings or a tracker-blocking browser extension, or by contacting us at editor@offthepress.com and asking us to exclude you.
Analytics We Operate Ourselves
Separately from the third-party analytics described above, Off The Press operates its own first-party measurement on this Website. It is served from our own domain and records: the page path you viewed, the referring page that sent you to us, the amount of time the page was actually visible in your browser, a general device category, and, if you arrived from one of our newsletters, which newsletter it was.
This measurement sets no cookies and stores nothing in your browser. To count returning readers without identifying them, we convert your IP address and browser user-agent string into an irreversible cryptographic hash using a secret key. Your raw IP address and user-agent are not stored alongside this measurement, the hash cannot be converted back into them, and we can invalidate all historical linkage by rotating the key. Traffic we identify as automated is excluded rather than counted.
We also count clicks on the outbound links to publishers that appear across the Website, our social posts, and our newsletters. What we record is which story was clicked, which publisher it went to, and which of our channels it came from. These counts are not associated with an individual reader.
Advertising
This Website is monetized through advertising placed by Ezoic Inc., which acts as our advertising partner and, together with the advertising exchanges and demand partners it works with, collects and uses certain data for advertising purposes. This may include cookies and similar technologies, your IP address, device and browser characteristics, and information about the pages you view, used to select advertising, measure its performance, cap repetition, and detect fraud. Some of these partners may use this information to show you personalized advertising.
Ezoic maintains a disclosure specific to this Website, listing the categories of data processed and the partners involved, which you can read at Ezoic’s privacy disclosure for offthepress.com. Ezoic’s general privacy policy is available at ezoic.com/privacy-policy.
A consent management tool is presented on this Website where required by law. Where it applies, it is the place to review and change your choices about advertising cookies and personalized advertising, and you can reopen it at any time to change a previous choice. Please note that this consent tool governs advertising; the analytics described in the sections above are controlled separately, through the methods listed in each of those sections and under “Your Privacy Choices and Rights” below.
This Website also embeds a video player supplied by Connatix. When a video unit loads, Connatix may set cookies and collect device and viewing information in order to deliver and measure video advertising. You can read Connatix’s privacy policy here.
Service Providers and Other Third Parties
Off The Press engages a small number of companies to operate this Website. They receive only what they need to perform their function, and they are not permitted to use it for their own unrelated purposes except as described in their own policies:
- Cloudflare — hosting, content delivery, and security for this Website. Your request necessarily passes through Cloudflare, which processes IP addresses and request metadata to serve pages and to protect the site against attacks and automated abuse. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.
- Ezoic — advertising, as described above.
- Contentsquare — behavioral analytics and session replay, as described above.
- Connatix — video player and video advertising, as described above.
- An email delivery provider — sends our newsletters to subscribers on our behalf.
- Google Fonts — this Website loads typefaces from Google’s font service, which means your browser makes a request to Google and Google receives your IP address in the course of serving those files.
- YouTube — video from our YouTube channel plays in an embedded player. If you play a video, YouTube receives information about that interaction under Google’s policies.
Off The Press does not sell your personal information for money. Some of the advertising activity described above may be considered a “sale” or a “sharing” of personal information for targeted advertising under certain U.S. state privacy laws, and the controls described below are available to you for that reason.
Data Retention
We keep the information described in this policy only for as long as it serves the purposes for which it was collected, and we remove or de-identify it when it is no longer needed for those purposes or for a legal obligation. Information held by the third parties named above is retained according to their own policies and retention periods, which are described in the policies linked in each section.
Your Privacy Choices and Rights
Wherever you live, you can contact us at editor@offthepress.com to ask what personal information we hold about you, to ask us to correct it, or to ask us to delete it. We will respond to your request as required by the law that applies to you. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.
If you are a resident of California or another U.S. state with a comprehensive privacy law, you may have the right to know what personal information is collected about you and how it is used and disclosed, the right to request correction or deletion, the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information and of targeted advertising, and the right to appeal a decision we make about your request. You may exercise these rights by emailing us at the address above, and you may also use the advertising consent tool and Contentsquare’s Do Not Sell or Share portal directly.
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to our processing of your personal information, the right to data portability, the right to withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent, and the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.
You can also limit collection yourself at any time: adjust your browser’s privacy settings, use a tracker-blocking or ad-blocking browser extension, or use your browser’s private browsing mode. This Website does not respond to browser “Do Not Track” signals, because no common industry standard for interpreting them has been established.
Links to Other Websites
Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.
These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.
Off The Press may offer links to other websites. When you click on one of these links, you are entering another website domain for which Off The Press is not responsible. Off The Press is not responsible for the policies and practices of other companies outside of Off The Press. We encourage you to read the privacy policies on all such websites because their policies may be different than ours. The inclusion of any link does not imply affiliation, endorsement or adoption by Off The Press of the linked site or any information contained therein.
When you use our website and enter your email address on our website (either to log in, or sign up for a newsletter, or similar), we may share with solution providers and its group companies information that we collect from you, such as your email (in hashed, pseudonymous form), IP address, or information about your browser or operating system, with any of the following, acting as “joint controllers” (as applicable and defined in the GDPR).
This Site is affiliated with Ezoic Inc. for the purposes of placing advertising on the Site, and Ezoic will collect and use certain data for advertising purposes, as described under “Advertising” above. Learn more about Ezoic’s data usage on this Site here.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the services we use or in the law. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Material changes will be reflected here before they take effect wherever we are required to do so, and your continued use of this Website after an update means you accept the revised policy. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
