Trump Not Allowed To Speak During NY Civil Trial Closing Arguments

In his New York civil business fraud trial, former President Donald Trump will not present his own closing argument, as Judge Arthur Engoron withdrew permission for the unconventional plan.

Closing arguments in the trial are scheduled for the following day. Trump’s lawyer, Alina Habba, expressed little surprise at the judge’s decision.

The trial, brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James, alleges that Trump inflated his net worth on financial statements to obtain loans and insurance, potentially leading to significant financial penalties and business restrictions.

Trump, a leading Republican candidate for the 2024 election, denies any wrongdoing, labeling the case a “hoax” and a political attack. Both James and the judge are Democrats.

While it is rare for individuals with legal representation to deliver their closing arguments, Trump’s legal team initially indicated that he planned to present a personal summation.

The judge set strict boundaries, limiting Trump’s remarks to relevant facts and prohibiting the introduction of new evidence or commentary on irrelevant matters. Additionally, the judge forbade any campaign speech or attacks on the court, the judge, and other involved parties.
