New Orleans Now U.S. Murder Capital

Popular Louisiana tourist city has overtaken St. Louis for top spot, with 141% increase in homicides, compared to recent years, new data shows

  • There were  52 homicides per 100,000 residents  in New Orleans as of Sept. 11, according to data from the Metropolitan Crime Commission, an organization that tracks crime.
  • Homicides in New Orleans are up 141%, compared to 2019 and up 78% compared to 2021, according to the data.
  • St. Louis Police Department data shows nearly 45 homicides per 100,000 residents in that city, as of Sept. 17.
