Duke volleyball player Rachel Richardson claimed last month that she had been subjected to racist slurs in a match at Brigham Young University.
The mainstream media outlets ran with the story, which apparently was too enticing to verify.
BYU’s student newspaper, The Cougar Chronicle, did investigate the story and found no sources in the crowd who heard the slurs.
BYU did a separate, “extensive” investigation that confirmed the Chronicle’s reporting. The university apologized to the unidentified fan who had been accused of using the slurs and overturned a ban on the fan attending sporting events.
