MLB Adopts Sweeping Rules Changes Over Players’ Objections

  • MajorLeague Baseball voted to implement a pitch clock and ban defensive shifts – moves intended to speed up play and increase action. The moves take effect in 2023.
  • The pitch clock will be 15 seconds with the bases empty and 20 seconds with runners on base.
  • Minor League Baseball has tested the pitch clock and found that games finished in less than 2 hours, 30 minutes. Major League games average more than 3 hours.
  • Player representatives voted against the pitch clock and ban on defensive shifts, saying they preferred to see these moves phased in rather than go into effect all at once in 2023.
