Miami Beach Considers Bounty For Iguana Invasion

Iguanas are considered an invasive species whose population reportedly continues to increase in Florida, causing property damage and other problems

  • The large lizards are undermining seawalls and other structure and leaving “mounds of poop wherever they go,” a city commissioner recently said.
  • “I think that’s the better use of our money than hiring … five guys with raccoon caps, that are gonna go around to the public properties – they’re not going to go on private properties,” the commission said about paying residents to kill the iguanas, as the city searches for a vendor to help keep the booming population under control.
  • The city has reportedly already quadrupled its iguana removal budget – from $50,000 to $200,000.
