West Virginia Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin said Sunday that he would back Democrat-turned-Independent Sen. Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema for 2024 reelection.
If Democrat Rep. Ruben Gallego competes as expected for the seat next year, Manchin would be backing a candidate not in his party.
Machnin cited Sinema’s unwillingness to help Senate Democrats end the 60-vote filibuster for the passage of most legislation.
“She stood tall when it was time to stand tall, protecting the institution,” Manchin said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
Manchin also argued that when some conservatives called for the end to the filibuster while Donald Trump was president and Republicans controlled the Senate, he and Sinema opposed the so-called nuclear option in 2019.
