Congressional Panels Get To Work On Electoral College Changes

The House and Senate each are set this week to work on separate measures to change the 135-year-old Electoral Count Act of 1887, in the aftermath of efforts on Jan. 6, 2021 to disrupt Congress' certification of the 2020 presidential election results.

  • The House Rules Committee will take up a still-unseen, bipartisan bill Tuesday titled the Presidential Election Reform Act.
  • The Senate Rules and Administration Committee announced Friday it would “mark up” a bipartisan bill later this month to revamp the law and clarifying what happens during presidential transitions.
  • Despite bipartisan support for the bills in both chambers, Congress has just a few legislative days remaining before an election that could shift party control of one or both chambers.
  • The Senate bill attempts in part to clarify the vice president’s role when electoral votes are counted as “ministerial.”
