Nearly 1.5 million homes have lost power, with mass outages reported in Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana.
The bomb cyclone that has enveloped much of the country has produced bitterly cold temperatures – even colder than Mars in some areas of the country.
The storm combines blizzard conditions with hurricane-force winds, shutting down air travel and turning highways into death traps.
