California is weighing a plan that calls for paying each black resident of the state $223,200 in reparations.
A nine-member task force, authorized by Gov. Gavin Newsom, recommended $569 billion in reparations for black residents, though the number could increase before the final recommendations are submitted in June 2023.
Currently, 6.5 percent of California’s population, or 2.5 million people, identify as black or African-American.
